The 2019 recipients of the Valiente Awards were announced March 10 at our celebration hosted by The Drum during SXSW.
“We were excited to announce a diverse group of winners for the 2019 awards,” said John Ellett, CEO of Springbox, a Prophet company. “This year’s winners represent different industries, backgrounds and accomplishments, but they all share one common characteristic — the courage to disrupt the status quo. They are great examples of the impact transformational marketing leaders can have when they are willing to stick their necks out and challenge conventional thinking.”
The winners in each category this year are:
Inspire – David Rubin, CMO, New York Times.
David became the company’s first CMO a couple of years ago and has helped guide the transition from an advertising-based publisher to a subscription-based content company. He led the articulation of a brand purpose built upon an enduring company culture — “We seek the truth, and help people understand the world.” The company’s provocative advertising helped give “the truth a voice.”
Be Bold – Gabi Zijderveld, CMO, Affectiva.
Gabi is the marketing leader for an innovative company that uses artificial intelligence to analyze facial expressions. She has led the creation of a new industry category, dubbed emotion AI, and has been a vocal advocate for ethics and transparency in the application of AI.
Connect – Sherif Mityas, Chief Experience Officer, TGI Fridays.
Sherif has a unique leadership role that combines marketing, operations and IT. He has been a champion for using innovative digital technology to improve the physical experience of Fridays guests. He is pioneering the use of AI in a range of applications — from helping guests craft their own unique cocktails to autonomously creating personalized communications to thousands of loyal guests simultaneously.
Innovate – Ken Thewes, CMO, Regal Entertainment.
Ken realized that moviegoers have choices in where they see their favorite movies. He felt it was important that Regal Theaters excel at creating unique experiences for its guests and implemented rewards for repeat visits. The company also introduced an innovative app that includes augmented reality capabilities to put moviegoers into the scenes of selected new releases.
Transform – Angelica Munson, Global President, Chief Digital Officer, Shiseido Group.
Angelica was chartered with enhancing how the marketers of the global beauty company engaged its customers who are living a digital lifestyle. In the course of the past two years, the Shiseido + Digital Academy has helped transform 3,000 marketers globally into digitally savvy professionals.
We’d like to congratulate all our winners and finalists! And to thank everyone who came to the event to celebrate courageous marketing with us. This year’s Valiente Awards celebration was extra special for us here at Springbox because we announced that we have joined the Prophet family!
